Mitchell Poised To Qualify For Clean Elections

March 30, 2010

First Democratic Candidate for Governor to Receive 3,250 $5 Contributions

AUGUSTA – Senate President Libby Mitchell (D-Kennebec), a Democratic candidate for Governor, announced this morning that she has submitted more than 3,250 $5 contributions required to qualify for Clean Elections funding. Mitchell is believed to be the first Democratic candidate for Governor to be able to qualify for Clean Elections funding.

Mitchell remarked, “I am honored by the grassroots support we have received from all corners of Maine. Running as a Clean Elections candidate means that instead of asking the special interests for campaign contributions, I can spend my time listening to Mainers and explaining my plan to help strengthen Maine’s economy.”

Mitchell continued, “Everyone recognizes that these are tough times for a lot of people in Maine and even $5 can be a meaningful sacrifice. The reason why people have been so generous with their $5 contributions is that there’s a recognition that it will take more than good intentions to help our great state to do what it takes to achieve our potential. It will take someone with a track record of getting things done in state government from balancing the budget in a severe economic crisis and advancing income tax cuts to increasing funding for energy efficiency and workforce development. I’ve shown that kind of leadership.”

Mitchell’s campaign has received national attention given her status as the only woman in American history to serve as Speaker of the State House and President of the State Senate. Monday’s Boston Globe profiled Mitchell’s efforts to attract thousands of $5 contributions. The Politico named her one of 25 political leaders to watch.

The Maine Ethics Commission confirmed to the Mitchell campaign on Monday that they had submitted more than the minimum number of $5 contributions, 3,250. The campaign will be officially certified as a Clean Elections campaign after formally submitting the required paper work within the next week.
