New poll solidifies Libby Mitchell’s standing as Democratic Gubernatorial frontrunner

April 20, 2010

AUGUSTA – The Libby Mitchell Campaign for Governor today announced poll numbers showing her leading the Democratic field by 20 points with the June vote less than two months away. The poll, conducted on behalf of the campaign by the national polling firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, confirms similar trends seen in independent polling from Kiley and Company in July and from the national political Web site the Daily Kos in September.

According to a statewide survey of 587 likely Democratic primary voters, Mitchell leads the race for the gubernatorial nomination with 36 percent of the vote. Steve Rowe receives 16 percent and Pat McGowan receives 13 percent, with John Richardson and Rosa Scarcelli garnering 5 and 4 percent support, respectively.

The poll shows Libby’s strong record of accomplishments, coupled with new ideas to move the state forward, which positions her well to cross the finish line in June,” said Campaign Manager Jeremy Kennedy. “Libby is a problem solver, who knows how to work together with people to get things done. While the results of the poll are good news, we know the only poll that counts is the one on Election Day. Libby will be working harder than ever to earn votes across the state.”

The poll also shows Mitchell with a 59 percent excellent or good performance rating as state senate president and a 34 point net positive rating (44 percent favorable, 10 percent unfavorable). Her standing and name identification are at 68 percent, putting her well above the rest of the Democratic field.

Last July the Maine-based Kiley and Company conducted an independent poll of 301 Democratic primary voters. Libby Mitchell received 37 percent, Steve Rowe received 20 percent, Pat McGowan received 10 percent, and Dawn Hill received 3 percent. A second national poll from the political Web site the Daily Kos also showed Mitchell leading the primary field in September.
